Boulevardier
The Boulevardier was born in 1920s Paris — American expats fleeing Prohibition, essentially building a bourbon Negroni and calling it something else. It faded for most of the 20th century, then got rediscovered when bartenders started digging through old recipe books during the cocktail renaissance of the 2000s. A hundred years later, here we are doing it again — this time without the bourbon.
It translates remarkably well. Kentucky 74 brings the oak and bite you expect from a whiskey base. Spirit of Milano stands in for Campari with bold bitterness, bitter orange, cinnamon, and clove. Roots Divino Sweet Vermouth adds herbal depth and just enough sweetness to keep it balanced. Aromatic bitters tie it together. Spirit-forward, slow-sipping, genuinely complex.
What's inside:
- Spiritless Kentucky 74 (alcohol-free whiskey, 750ml)
- Free Spirits Spirit of Milano (alcohol-free aperitivo, 750ml)
- Roots Divino Sweet Vermouth (alcohol-free, 700ml) - Not pictured
- All the Bitter Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters (2 oz)
Recipe: Keep spirits chilled. Pour 1½ oz Kentucky 74, ¾ oz Spirit of Milano, and ¾ oz Roots Divino directly into a rocks glass. Add 3 dashes Aromatic bitters and one large ice cube. Stir 10 to 15 seconds. Garnish with an orange twist, expressing the oils over the drink before dropping it in. Recipe adapted from All The Bitter — Spirit of Milano is bolder than the original Giffard Aperitif Sirop, so we dialed it back slightly. Add more to taste.
Why this works: The Boulevardier is a spirit-forward drink with nowhere to hide. The split between Kentucky 74's oak backbone and Spirit of Milano's bitter orange punch gives it the structure it needs. Roots Divino rounds the edges without softening the drink into something sweet.
A note on the aperitivo: This bundle uses Spirit of Milano in place of Giffard Aperitif Sirop, which is what All the Bitter's original recipe calls for. Both are Campari-style alcohol-free aperitivos — bold, bitter, orange-forward. If you have Wilfred's on hand, it works too, but expect a softer, more herbal drink.
Alcohol-free • 0.0% ABV • Vegan • Gluten-free
Note: Roots Divino Sweet Vermouth contains sulfites. Spirit of Milano contains capsaicin (a natural component of chili peppers used to simulate alcohol's warming effect) — worth knowing if you're sensitive to spice.
